As someone who struggles to name characters (Fun fact: one of the MCs in my half finished novel is legit called Pro, as in Protagonist and has been for two years) this is something that has always interested me but it's also half the reason I love warrior cat naming so much; it's just so easy to adopt a dedicated structure.
My Process:
I'm a massive fan of traditional naming (this site is great for traditional naming) which is where the prefix describes the appearance and the suffix describes the qualities of the cat. I use only a few suffixes from the first few arcs of canon. One of my big differences to other traditional namers is I treat -fur -pelt and -stripe as saying the "biggest thing that ____ brings to the clan is their indefinable way of taking on the world". I feel that names should be a celebration of a warrior so using these suffixes for "this cat has no notable skills and doesn't fit a personality suffix" doesn't gel with me. I think this is fitting as most clan cats are tabbies and/or have markings making all their pelts look different hence celebrating their individuality.
For clan cats I normally start with either an appearance or a prefix I want to use (which I base the appearance on). From there I think about the cat's greatest strength and pick the suffix that best matches. I do try to pick a prefix that works with my desired suffix. For non-clan cats I use this site and basically spend hours until I find something I like.
Name Changes:
I think they're great. I mean they describe the cat's appearance and based on my system pretty much say "____'s greatest strength is they will fight to survive and are tough as nails". After all if a cat is terribly injured they're physically and mentally really tough.
Favorite names:
I love the prefixes Moth- (tbh I just love Mothnose's name so much) and Newt-. I like the suffix -storm (and seem to make a lot of characters with the personality for it).
How do you go about naming characters? I've got a few questions to get the ball rolling but feel free to say anything or anything about how you name characters.
